Mission

The Tinker Impact Fund exists to love people well by creating inclusive belonging, practical support, and low-barrier opportunities for learning, wellness, and microenterprise in Donaldsonville and surrounding communities.

History

The Tinker Impact Fund was founded by Jessica Tomapat to create a place where people could explore their interests, develop practical skills, and build pathways toward greater independence and self-sufficiency.

As a neurodivergent individual, Jessica experienced firsthand how many talented people are overlooked by traditional systems despite possessing valuable creativity, determination, and potential. She recognized that access—not ability—is often the barrier preventing individuals from pursuing opportunities, developing skills, and participating fully in economic and community life.

Driven by that belief, Jessica purchased and restored a historic building in downtown Donaldsonville to serve as a permanent community asset. Ownership of the facility provides Tinker with the flexibility to develop programs, partnerships, and shared resources that directly respond to community needs while reducing many of the costs and limitations often faced by emerging nonprofit organizations.

What began as a vision for an inclusive community space has evolved into a growing ecosystem of programs designed to expand access to opportunity. Through entrepreneurship, educational enrichment, workforce readiness, creative expression, and community engagement, Tinker helps individuals explore interests, build confidence, develop skills, and strengthen their ability to support themselves and their families.

Today, Tinker serves youth, families, entrepreneurs, makers, artists, and individuals who have historically been underserved by traditional workforce systems. The organization is particularly committed to creating welcoming opportunities for individuals who may face barriers to participation, including neurodivergent individuals, women, youth, and families with limited access to educational or economic resources.

Through shared facilities, educational programming, mentorship, entrepreneurial support, and community partnerships, Tinker reduces barriers that often prevent people from pursuing their goals. By providing access to resources, equipment, learning experiences, and supportive networks, the organization helps participants transform talents, interests, and ideas into meaningful personal, educational, and economic outcomes.

Tinker's long-term vision is to strengthen the civic capacity of Donaldsonville by helping residents move from consumers of opportunity to creators of opportunity. By expanding access to entrepreneurship, learning, and community participation, Tinker seeks to ensure that local growth translates into lasting benefits for the people who call Ascension Parish home.

 

Programs & Pathways

The Tinker Impact Fund exists to expand access to opportunity.

Many individuals possess talent, creativity, determination, and entrepreneurial potential, yet face barriers that limit their ability to transform those assets into meaningful economic and personal outcomes. For families with limited resources, aspiring entrepreneurs, individuals who have historically been underserved by traditional workforce systems, and youth with limited access to enrichment opportunities, the challenge is often not ability—it is access. Tinker works to remove those barriers.

Through shared resources, educational programming, mentorship, community partnerships, and low-cost pathways to entrepreneurship and skill development, Tinker creates opportunities for individuals to learn, create, earn, and contribute. By reducing overhead costs, increasing access to equipment and facilities, and providing supportive environments for growth, Tinker helps participants focus on developing their talents rather than overcoming obstacles that would otherwise place opportunity out of reach.

This work is delivered through three interconnected pathways that advance Tinker's core pillars of Belonging & Wellness, Youth & Family Enrichment, and Community Resilience.

 

Entrepreneur Pathways

Tinker creates accessible pathways for entrepreneurs, makers, artists, and small business owners to develop skills, test ideas, and build sustainable income opportunities.

Through the Tinker Impact Kitchen, aspiring food entrepreneurs gain access to facilities, equipment, training, mentorship, and opportunities to bring products to market. Through the Tinker Makerspace, participants can access tools, technology, and creative resources to develop products, produce marketing materials, create merchandise, and strengthen entrepreneurial skills.

Community markets, artist showcases, educational workshops, and business development support provide participants with real-world opportunities to gain experience, reach customers, build confidence, and grow their ventures. By reducing startup costs and increasing access to resources, Tinker helps transform talent, creativity, and ambition into pathways toward greater self-sufficiency.

 

Youth & Family Pathways

Tinker provides hands-on learning experiences that help youth and families build confidence, practical skills, creativity, and curiosity.

Programs such as Food Science Camp combine STEM learning, creativity, and real-world problem-solving to introduce participants to science, entrepreneurship, and innovation in engaging and accessible ways. Additional enrichment programs, workshops, and family-centered learning experiences create opportunities for lifelong learning while strengthening family engagement and community participation.

By expanding access to educational opportunities that may otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable, Tinker helps young people discover interests, develop skills, and envision new possibilities for their future.

 

Community Belonging Pathways

Strong communities require spaces where people feel welcomed, connected, and valued.

Through wellness programming, volunteer opportunities, community events, creative gatherings, and inclusive community spaces, Tinker creates opportunities for individuals and families to build relationships, develop confidence, and engage more fully in community life.

These experiences help strengthen social connections, encourage community participation, and create a supportive environment where individuals can pursue personal growth, explore new opportunities, and contribute their talents to the broader community.

Together, these pathways create a community ecosystem that supports learning, entrepreneurship, belonging, and participation. By reducing barriers and expanding access to opportunity, Tinker helps individuals build the skills, relationships, and confidence needed to participate more fully in the educational, economic, and community opportunities emerging throughout Donaldsonville and South Louisiana.
